DOCUMENTING THE CITY: CONTENTS

Documenting the City: Art and Society in Newport is an exhibition and online gallery and archive to celebrate Newport's coming of age as a City following the assumption of official city status in 2002, showcasing art works from the permanent collection of the Newport Museum and Art Gallery.

Documenting the City explores the visual representation of Newport and its region from the eighteenth century to the present. We also explore the art world of Newport, with particular reference to the history of the Newport College of Art.

Documenting the City provides a unique perspective upon the making of modern Newport. We trace the evolution of the modern city from the turbulent origins of the industrial frontier and Chartism, through the change and challenges of the twentieth century, to the current prospects of the new entrepreneurial City of Newport. Newport has risen to the challenge of modernity across the generations with a passion and a vision all of its own. | Read more here
